24th July 2024Athletes Shine at National Championships
English Schools 12th and 13th July
It is important to recognise that any athletes being selected to compete for the County at the English Schools Championships is already a great achievement. Only a very small percentage of the athletes achieve the required standard.
Day 1 of the English Schools Championships saw Joel Cantrill in the 400m, Lewis Boyce in the 800m and Isla Swindlehurst in the 200m, all performing well in their heats. Nathan Mugoti (Long Jump) and Izzy Gould (Hammer) both making it to the final, which is an amazing achievement. Ewan Withnall also made through the heats of the 1500m into the final on Day 2.
On day 2 George Kugelmann had a great competition finishing 10th overall in a strong field and Izzy Fellows aiming for the top 8 final finished an incredible 4th competing in a very strong field, which includes the junior Commonwealth champion and record holder. Maisie Truman finished 10th in her 1500m race and Joel Cantrill returned in the relay for Derbyshire qualifying for the final. Isla Rogers ranked 13th out of 14 athletes going in to the competition and beat her nerves to finish an impressive 6th place. Imogen Laugharne placed 9th in the high jump, which is a great achievement, just short of her personal best.
Last but no means least Ewan Withnall ran a great race in his 1500m final, showing maturity beyond his years to win Gold and in a fiercely competitive long jump competition Kaiden Ramsey earned silver with a huge jump of 7m29.
England Championships (Seniors, U23 and U20) 19th – 21st July
The standards for these championships are exceptionally tough with only Kaiden Ramsey (LJ) and Izzy Fellows (Javelin) were back in action and both are in the first year of the age-group!
Kaiden Ramsey finished a strong 5th in a competition where there was only 30cm between 1st and 5th place! Izzy Fellows didn’t quite have the competition she had wanted, but kept her head and finished 6th place (5th in English Athlete). Both athletes performance were hampered by the swirling wind in the stadium, but both proving their ability at a national level.
This coming weekend (26th-28th July) will see Ewan Whitnall (1500m), Isla Swindlehurst (200m), Nathan Mugoti (Long Jump) and Isla Rogers (Javelin) witll take their turn at the U15/U17 England Champs! Good Luck to all of them.
