2017 Staffordshire County Cross-Country Championships Report/Results
14th January 2017

Burton Ac Runners travelled to the west midlands for the annual Staffordshire County Cross country championships in Aldersley, Wolverhampton

Just like in 2016, there had been a heavy rain in the days leading up to the race. This made running conditions very tricky and in some parts of the course it was heavy thick mud. But this did not deter the running from putting in solid performances

Ailis Macfarlane, is undoubtedly the clubs outstanding middle and long distance runner. Having slowly made a near full recovery from injury that had plagued her during 2016. This race wasn’t about fast times or pb’s but just simply getting around the course comfortably. With her elegant running style and long strides that is exactly what she did, finishing in 19th place, 4 places up from the 2016 place with a time of 26.28s. With a few more races left in the cross country calendar, this result will surely have given her confidence to deliver some big performances before the track and field season starts

Matthew Lear, is rapidly becoming one of the clubs rising middle distance and cross country stars. He was making his debut in the Staffordshire County Championships and despite the terrible ground conditions, produced a brilliant display and finished in 12th place with a time of 22.21s and in doing so was selected to represent Staffordshire at the upcoming intercounty match

Kaliyah Morant-Hudson, who just like Lear, was also making her Debut in the county championships. The multi-talented athlete put in a solid performance and finished in 32nd place with a time of 14.45m

Rob Sharratt was the first home for the senior men’s team. He finished in 111th place with a time of 47.59s , an 8 minute improvement on his 2014 county championship time

Paul Mathie was next home for the senior men’s team and finished just behind Sharratt and came home in 112th with a time of 48.14s, a 7 minute improvement on his 2011 county championship time

Paul Smith made up the men’s team and finished in 115th position with a time of 51.02s

Nicola Long put in a solid performance and battled against the heavy mud and cold to take a49th place with a time of 43.20s

With the national cross country championships taking place next month at Woolaton park, Nottingham. This was great preparation for our distance runners
