Ewan Withnall travelled to Cardiff for the UK Athletics Cross Challenge first round. After dominating the North Midlands Cross Country league with 7 consecutive wins, he was looking for more competition.
In Cardiff he faced 4 of the top 10 in the under 15, 3 killometres rankings and Louie Muir of Scotland. Muir had won the schools international cross country race in Dublin, when Withnall had finished 8th.
Withnall started well on the 3.2 killometre race, comfortably in the front group. As they entered the hilly muddy section, he kept out of trouble while a few slipped and fell. Halfway round, Muir and Withnall pulled clear of the rest of the field. Withnall picking up the pace in the last 500 metres to take the win in 9.36 with Muir 9.38 and 3rd was Osian Parry of Wales in 9.44.
In two weeks the next cross challenge race is in Liverpool and he will be racing an even stronger field. Where he will be looking to increase his lead in the cross challenge.
